The castle is nowadays most attractive as one of Vlad Tepes's (identified in time as Dracula) residences.

It was built by Teutonic knights and then rebuilt by the people of Brasov in order to become a first defense point of Transylvania, before reaching Brasov.

After the First World War the castle was given to Queen Maria as a gift of gratitude from the people. During the fifties, under the communist regime, it was declared a historical monument and became a museum.

There is a local legend saying that it is haunted by a number of ghosts equal to the number of stairs at the entrance.
